We at Visit Roseville have long sung the praises of the John Rose Minnesota OVAL and skaters agree—it recently won the title of Best Ice Skating Rink in the 2023 USA Today 10Best Readers' Choice Awards.

The 10Best awards are determined by reader votes. After an expert planel narrowed the pool to 20 finalists, readers voted on the rink that best provided a "superior ice skating experience." When the final votes were tallied, the OVAL emerged as the #1 choice. The recognition is extra-special this year, as it comes as the OVAL celebrates its 30th season in operation.

OVAL Fast Facts

  • At 110,000 square feet, the OVAL is the largest outdoor sheet of refrigerated ice in North America
  • 84 miles of underground piping keep the rink frozen in weather up to 50 degrees Fahrenheit
  • The outer track is 400 meters around, making four laps of the track one mile
  • The American Bandy Association and the Greater Minnesota Speedskating Association call the OVAL home
  • The OVAL is located on the 45th parallel, which means it is exactly halfway between the North Pole and the equator
