When summer rolls around in Minneapolis & Saint Paul we can’t help but want to spend every second outside enjoying the beautiful, summer weather. Do you get the feeling of stretching out and touching the sky? You know you do!
Summer 2017 in the Twin Cities is going to be filled with so many fun events (outdoors and indoors). We put together a list of our top summer events that we’re looking forward to this summer in Minneapolis & Saint Paul.
Kangaroo Crossing | Minnesota Zoo
The Minnesota Zoo’s summer exhibit opens to the public Memorial Day Weekend and features red kangaroos, wallabies and emus. What makes this exhibit extra special is that you get to walk among these Australian cuties in their habitat. Don’t let summer fly by before visiting because the exhibit closes Labor Day Weekend. Re-Opening | Minneapolis Sculpture Garden & Minnesota Children’s Museum
Mark it on your calendar — the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden will reopen on June 3rd & and Minnesota Children’s Museum will reopen June 7th! Both attractions will hold special grand reopening events celebrating the new, exciting features to be explored. Garden Tours will be available June-August to learn more about the art and artists featured in the garden & they will also open their popular Artist-Designed Mini Golf on June 8th. The Minnesota Children’s Museum is offering ticketed Sneak Peek Days for those who just can’t wait to play in the 10 new exhibits inside the museum.
St. Paul Saints | CHS Field
Now in their 3rd season at CHS Field, the St. Paul Saints are still bringing the FUN to every single home baseball game. The Saints have adopted a “Fun is Good” attitude and that includes fun from the diva of the diamond, MUDONNA!, the popular ball pig, Alternative Fats and many more entertaining characters throughout the ballpark. Tickets start at only $5, which means anyone and everyone can enjoy a ball game at least once this summer. On August 2nd, 2017, don’t miss The Sandlot on the videoboard for AARP’s Movie Night at CHS Field. It’s free admission! Gates open at 5:30PM, the movie begins at 7PM.
The Science Behind Pixar | Science Museum of Minnesota
Who is your favorite Pixar character? It’s hard to pick our favorite, but if we had to choose just one we think WALL-E is pretty darn cute, or maybe Dug the talking dog (SQUIRREL!)… OK, we can’t choose! No matter who is your favorite Pixar character, you’ll love exploring The Science Behind Pixar exhibit opening June 9th at the Science Museum of Minnesota. What makes this exhibit special is you’ll get to explore the science and technology that brings to life the world’s most beloved animated films and their memorable characters.
Rosefest | Roseville
Rosefest is Roseville’s annual summer celebration bringing the community of Roseville together during a week full of fun. This year, Rosefest will take place June 22nd-June 26th with a special Party in the Park event on July 4th where fireworks will light up the sky. From the Rose Parade, to the Taste of Rosefest, to Run/Roll for the Roses, Rosefest offers events for adults, kids and for the entire family to enjoy together. Don’t forget to participate in the hunt for the Golden Rose Medallion!
Back to the 50’s | Minnesota State Fairgrounds
12,000+ hot rods, customs and classics will line the streets inside the Minnesota State Fairgrounds for the 44th annual MSRA Back to the 50’s Weekend, June 23rd-25th. Beyond the beautiful cars you’ll hear live 50’s music Friday & Saturday night, browse a gigantic swap meet on Sunday, play in MSRA Kid’s World with a pedal tractor pull, games and activities on Satuday, and share stories with car lovers from around the United States. In 2016, MSRA Back to the 50’s was named #1 Best Car Show in the nation by USA Today. If that doesn’t get you excited about this car show, we don’t know what will!
Minnesota United FC | TCF Bank Stadium
Major League Soccer is here to stay in Minnesota! As their new stadium is being built in Saint Paul, Minnesota United FC will be scoring goals at TCF Bank Stadium in 2017. Although games are already underway, you still have time to catch a match because their last home page is scheduled for October 7th, 2017.
Robert Anderson’s Garden’s of Kaleidoscopes | Minnesota Landscape Arboretum
This spring and summer 15 interactive garden kaleidoscope installations will be placed on the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum’s Dahlberg and Morgan terraces and inside the Oswald Visitor Center. Robert Anderson’s Gardens of Kaleidoscopes will be placed at varying heights for both children and adults to enjoy the intricate prism designs activated when slowly turning the kaleidoscopes. Enjoy this artistic exhibit now through September 25th.
Twin Cities Jazz Festival | Saint Paul
Celebrating jazz music in the Twin Cities for 19 years, the Twin Cities Jazz Festival is a free concert spanning three days in Saint Paul’s Mears Park, June 22nd-24th. This years headlines include McCoy Tyner, Terence Blanchard, Anat Cohen, and Oskar Stenmark just to name a few. More festival events can be found at different locations throughout Saint Paul, not just in Mears Park. To keep the festival free in the future, feel free to donate any amount you can afford!
Twin Cities Pride | Minneapolis
Bringing the greater GLBT community together, Twin Cities Pride celebrates the Twin Cities diverse heritage and achievements in equality and how to continue to create awareness of issues. All events during Twin Cities Pride are open to everyone in the community and are safe for individuals to celebrate their relationships. The 2017 Twin Cities Pride events include a Festival, Parade, Art Show, Family Picnic, Rainbow Run 5k, and MUCH more in June.
Basilica Block Party | The Basilica of Saint Mary
If you’re a music fan and you’ve never been to the Basilica Block Party then you’re truly missing out on something special. The event was started as a fundraiser to help pay for the structural restoration of The Basilica of Saint Mary. Now in its 22nd year, music is still flowing from 3 stages during two amazing nights (July 7th & 8th) of live entertainment. The 2017 line-up includes Brandi Carlile, The Shins, WALK THE MOON, Walk Off The Earth, Gavin DeGraw, and many more favorites.
X Games | U.S. Bank Stadium
Skateboards, BMX bikes and Moto X bikes are taking over U.S. Bank Stadium when the X Games roll into Minneapolis for big air and tricks, July 13th-16th. Enjoy four days of the best action sports competitions in the world and some of the most influential and diverse music acts around today. Minnesota’s own, Alec Majerus from Rochester will be competing in Skateboard Street. Can’t make it to the X Games in 2017? They’re coming back to U.S. Bank Stadium in 2018!
Minneapolis Aquatennial | Minneapolis
The Best Days of Summer are BACK in Minneapolis, July 19th-22nd for the Minneapolis Aquatennial. Four days are packed with summer fun including the Torchlight 5K, Torchlight Parade, Candid Canines Film Fest (you guessed it, films showcasing dogs!), Twin Cities River Rats Aquatennial Water Ski Show, and amazing ooh-ahh worthy Target Fireworks (one of the top 5 annual fireworks displays in the nation).
What’s summer without baseball? The Minnesota Twins are off to a strong start and we’re loudly cheering for them (can you hear us?)! We love our hometown team and we also love what they’re serving their fans inside Target Field — Triple Sausage Sample Bloody Mary? YES PLEASE. We also can’t get enough of their theme nights like Star Wars Night where you can get a bobblehead of Brian Dozier dressed as a Stormtrooper. Finally, the ballpark is the perfect place to bring the family. The Cub Family Section starts at $10 a ticket for the alcohol-free family section and includes a hot dog and Pepsi (ticket prices vary per game). Go Twins!
Uptown Art Fair | Minneapolis
Over 350 talented artists from around the world set-up shop in Uptown during the Uptown Art Fair, August 4th-6th. The professional works of art range from sculptures to paintings to ceramics to jewelry. When you attend the fair you’ll enjoy more than just art in the outdoors. Non-stop entertainment on the Performance Stage will range from live music, improv, dancing and more. Also, grab a drink from a beer garden or something delicious from one of the 25 different food vendors.
Irish Fair of Minnesota
The largest FREE Irish fair in the country can be found right here in Minnesota. From August 11th-13th, the Irish Fair of Minnesota is celebrating Irish traditions with Irish music from Celtic rock to traditional, authentic food & beverages (even a special Irish Jucy Lucy!), Gaelic sports and sheep herding, historical seminars, children’s activities… the list continues. New this year you will see the Celtic Kitchen where a variety of food-related (always popular) events will take place, such as food demos and sampling. There will also be Food Fight Chef competitions and unique Irish foods — not to be missed!
Minnesota Renaissance Festival
If 300,000 annual visitors attend the Minnesota Renaissance Festival (weekends August 19th-October 1st) then it’s obviously an attraction to not miss in Minnesota! The 7 themed weekends with 250 artisan booths, 16 stages of live entertainment, live armored jousting, food fit for a king, mermaids, fairies, and more sells the festival on its own. Minnesota State Fair
It’s the “Great Minnesota Get-Together”, the most popular tourist destinations in Minnesota (more than 1.9 million guests annually). Every year the fair has something new for their loyal fair loving visitors. This year the Minnesota State Fair (August 24th-September 4th) will have one of the tallest traveling giant Ferris wheels in North America, The Great Big Wheel! Fair goers love to see the animals and watch the daily parade but one of their favorite things to do is EAT. Every year the State Fair announces new foods, which can be found (announced in June) and specialty brews & beverages (announced in August)! This years Grandstand line-up is full of favorites including Toby Keith, Jim Gaffigan, Usher, and Pentatonix, just to name a few. Obviously, you can’t miss these 12 days of fun!
Summer Beer Dabbler | CHS Field
Wrap up your summer with cold brews from more than 100 brewers sampling over 300 beers during the 9th Annual Summer Beer Dabbler, August 26th. Whole enjoying your glass of beer on the grass of CHS Field you’ll also be enjoying live music and other entertainment and activities, and ballpark food from several stands around the stadium.
